FHIR

FHIR (Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources) is an HL7 standard that represents clinical information as modular, structured resources exchanged over standard web APIs.

What FHIR actually changed

Earlier health data standards were powerful but heavy, and integrating with them was specialist work. FHIR made a deliberate trade: clinical rigour expressed in the ordinary idiom of the modern web — resources, REST, JSON — so that a competent engineer without a health-informatics background can build against it.

The result is that health data can now participate in normal software architecture instead of requiring an exception to it.

The Observation resource

Among FHIR resources, Observation is the one most relevant to connected care: it carries a measurement or finding together with the context that makes it interpretable — what was measured, in what units, on whom, when, and by which device.

That last element, provenance, is what allows a platform to hold values from very different sources without conflating them: a reading from a certified spirometer remains attributable to that device, distinct from an estimate produced by software.

What FHIR does not do

FHIR defines how information is represented and exchanged. It does not decide what the information means clinically, and it confers no regulatory status on a system that uses it. Adopting FHIR makes a platform connectable; it does not make it a medical device, nor exempt it from being one where that applies.

How INDACO.ONE approaches it

Every signal entering the platform is normalised as a FHIR Observation before it reaches the patient timeline. Values produced by certified devices are stored as measured, with provenance preserved and without recomputation. The platform's contribution is the longitudinal layer above: how a value relates to the same person's history and to signals from other modules.
