Healthcare Interoperability

Healthcare interoperability is the ability of different health systems and devices to exchange information and use it — not merely to transfer files, but to share meaning that the receiving system can act on.

Exchange is not the hard part. Meaning is.

Moving data between systems has been technically possible for decades. The difficulty has always been semantic: two systems can both receive a number and still disagree about what it represents, in which units, measured by what, on whom, and when.

Interoperability in the meaningful sense requires a shared vocabulary and a shared structure — so that a value arrives as an interpretable observation rather than as an unlabelled figure.

Why it became achievable

Modern standards, above all FHIR, express clinical information as structured resources over ordinary web APIs. That combination — clinical semantics plus conventional web technology — is what turned integration from a bespoke engineering project into something closer to a contract.

The economic consequence matters more than the technical one: when connection stops being expensive, connecting many sources stops being a strategic gamble and becomes an architectural default.

The layer above

Interoperability alone does not produce understanding. It produces access. Something still has to hold the connected information in one place, over time, and make sense of how it changes — otherwise a health system ends up with more integrated fragments, which is progress but not resolution.

How INDACO.ONE approaches it

INDACO.ONE is API-first. Every source — a wearable, a certified medical device, a camera, an electronic health record — is normalised into one data model, so that heterogeneous signals become comparable and land on a single patient timeline. Integrations extend the platform instead of forking it.

The platform develops no proprietary hardware. Devices are data sources, and their manufacturers are partners rather than competitors.
